Editorial Guidelines

Thank you for your interest in writing for Desert Dog News . We wish to create a smart, fun and informative editorial environment for our readers and advertisers.

Desert Dog News is looking for Tucson-area writers who wish to write about Tucson's pet culture including but not limited to: activities, local Tucsonans who are making a difference for the animals, events, non-fiction essays, adoption stories, travel and notable Tucsonans and their dogs. We are especially interested in local human interest stories that have to do with dogs. Please read our editorial profile.

Queries/Proposals:

Before preparing your article, please send a proposal to insure that it meets our editorial mission. An outline or a one page summary that includes a description and purpose of the article along with the proposed word count usually works best.

At this time, we may also be interested in reprints that have appeared in non-competing publications as long as you have rights to re-purpose/reprint the article. Please let us know in your query letter the name of the publication and the date if your article has previously been published.

Pertinent photos and/or illustrations greatly enhance an article's desirability. Please indicate the availability of photos or artwork in your query letter.

Articles should include views from multiple sources whenever possible. It is best to use sources that are reliable and have authority in their field. Please provide a general idea or examples of the sources that you plan to use.

If you have experience or credentials directly related to the topic of your article please let us know. Feel free to include a short bio.

Submission:

Please submit your proposal by e-mail to Gretel Hakanson gretel@desertdognews.com. You may use either plain text or MS Word format. We will attempt to reply to each proposal within two weeks of submission. At that time we will let you know if your article has been accepted and we will discuss word count, deadlines, etc.

Rights:

We generally ask for right of first publication. Desert Dog News may publish your article once in the magazine and once on our web site. This leaves you free to sell is else where later, if you desire.

Our column and department names, graphics not supplied by you, etc., remain the property of Desert Dog News/Sensible Press LLC.

Conflicts of Interest: We believe in clear separation of editorial and advertising. Please let us know of any potential situation which could be seen as influencing your opinion or description of a product, topic, or service.

Payment:

Up to 499 words: $50
500 - 799 words: $60
800 - 1199 words: $75
1200 - 1599 words: $100
1600 - 1999 words: $120
2000 - 2400 words: $140

We pay on the assigned word count, not what you submit. We determine payment at the time the article is accepted. Generally we pay within 45 days of accepting an article for publication.

We reserve the right to reject any submission. We do not pay for letters to the editor or other purely opinion pieces.
